The Brimbank Writers & Readers Festival: Microfiction Competition

Our World Out West: February 2–Midnight March 5, 2023

Are you a writer who lives, works, studies or plays in Brimbank?

We are asking all interested writers aged 18 and over, to submit bite-sized microfiction pieces of up to 200 words inspired by the phrase “Our World Out West”.

Each entry will be in the running for $500 in prizes, including a first prize of a $250 voucher from The Sun Bookshop in Yarraville.

Entries will be judged by award winning Melbourne author, Max Barry.

Terms and Conditions of Entry

  • Entries must be a maximum of 200 words long (not including title and author details).
  • Entries longer than 200 words will not be considered.
  • All genres of fiction are welcome.
  • One entry per person.
  • Entries are open to anyone aged 18 and over who lives, works, studies or plays in Brimbank.
  • Prizes will be book vouchers from the Sun Bookshop. $250 for first prize, $150 for second prize and $100 for third prize .
  • Judges' decisions on the selected winners are final.
  • Entries received after the closure date of midnight on the 5/3/23 will not be considered.
  • If your story is selected for reading at our awards ceremony we will contact you for permission to do so.
  • Winning entries may be published on the Brimbank Libraries Website, Brimbank BorrowBox Portal and other Brimbank Council websites.
  • Entries are via email only. No physical paper entries will be accepted.

How to Enter

  • Please submit stories to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it., using the subject line Microfiction Competition - Our World Out West submission.
  • The theme/inspiration for entries is “Our World Out West”. You may use this to inspire your story in any direction you see fit, and use your creative discretion as to how little or how much it influences your story.
  • Please submit entries as an attached Microsoft Word Document, with body text in size 12 Times New Roman or similar font.
  • Please include your name, age, phone number, email address, connection to Brimbank, story title and a word count at the top of your story, as in the example below. These elements do not count towards your word count.

The Brimbank Writers & Readers Festival (BWRF) is an annual event that encourages a love of reading and literature, celebrates creativity and diversity, as well as promoting lifelong learning for the Brimbank community. 

The 10-day festival program includes workshops, author talks, panel discussions, creative writing, storytelling, performance and more. There is no cost to attend events and the program will be offered in a range of delivery modes including online and in-person.
